Is there a relationship between the fight for increased marketing dollars and support for marriage equality? Target and Best Buy may not care, but others certainly are taking note. The travel industry has been focusing on this like a laser for years. Earlier this summer, Israel launched its campaign for a Tel Aviv gay vacation hot spot. Here in the US, Amtrak for the first time is courting LGBT travelers with a targeted $250,000 multimedia-advertising blitz this summer.

Recently (December 7, 2013), The New York Times ran a piece that asked the age-old question, “How Many American Men Are Gay?” The op-ed piece by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, which included an interesting map of the US, ventured to estimate this percentage based on a compilation and analysis of “surveys, social networks, pornographic searches and dating sites.” And the number comes in right around five percent gay nationwide.

Economist Stephen Dubner used his recent Freakanomics podcast to ask, “Are Gay Men Really Rich?” Back in October, Dubner’s fellow economist, Steve Levitt, attempted to rationalize how one might go about choosing a hometown. He explained that “amenities,” the kinds of things that people were willing to pay for, were key to an area’s appeal. Levitt explained that places which had lots of amenities in a condensed area tended to be more expensive. He said that, in general, childless couples engaged in some self-selection based on amenities that matched their lifestyles.

Last week, the MacArthur Foundation revealed the recipients of its so-called “genius” awards, a $625,000 grant dispensed over five years to innovators, visionaries, and trailblazers. Of the 24 winners this year, at least three are openly gay, meaning gay people are significantly overrepresented among the genius pool. The news has ledsome to speculate that gay geniuses outnumber straight ones, proportionally, in the population at large. Are gay people really smarter than straight people?
